James E. LeGrand, M.D.
Dr. James LeGrand, 69, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2017.
Born August 21, 1947 in Granite City, Illinois, he was predeceased by his father Elvis LeGrand and sister Carolyn LeGrand Crockarell. James is survived by his husband Dr. William Mirola, mother Ina LeGrand, daughter Valerie LeGrand Arendt (Jeffrey Arendt), son Todd LeGrand (Nicole Martinez-LeGrand), and one granddaughter Edythe Ina Arendt.
Jim received his BS in Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1969 where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He received his MD from the University of Illinois-Chicago in 1973. He was named to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society in 1972 and was board certified in Internal Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Care.
Jim began his medical career in Champaign, IL in 1977, moving to Indianapolis in 1991, where he worked a variety of private and group practices until his death. Most recently, he was a part of Indiana Physician Associates and St. Vincent’s Hospice. He was in the forefront of HIV and end-of-life care.
Jim had a passion for music and was proficient on the piano, flute, and piccolo. He sang with the Trinity Episcopal Church Choir and he played the flute in the Pride of Indy Band. He enjoyed traveling, fine food and wine, art, and culture.
Visitation on Thursday, May 25 from 5-8 pm at Trinity Episcopal Church, 3243 N. Meridian St. with services to follow, Friday, at 4:30 pm at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dr. LeGrand’s memory may be made to the Damien Center, Franciscan Hospice House, or to the University of Illinois Bands Annual Fund.
