James Dimos of Indianapolis, IN passed away on August 5, 2020. He was 59.
Born in Evanston, IL on May 23, 1961, Jim was the first son of John and Marianne Dimos. As
the oldest of three boys, Jim was the consummate big brother, always looking out for his two
younger siblings. As a loving son, he grew up working in the family business, the Beauty Spot
Restaurant in Gary, IN.
Jim graduated from Merrillville High School in 1979 where he excelled academically and played
both football and soccer. He graduated from Wabash College in 1983 as a member of Delta
Tau Delta Fraternity, again excelling academically and active in Student Senate, Pre-Law
Society, Student Life Committee and the campus radio station, WNDY-FM, enjoying
broadcasting college sporting events. While at Wabash, Jim interned with US House of
Representative Adam Benjamin, Jr. (D-IN, 1st District). Jim went on to graduate from
Washington University in St. Louis law school in 1986. While at Washington, Jim wrote for Law
Review, was the Associate Editor of the Journal of Urban and Contemporary Law and a
member of Phi Delta Phi.
Jim and Kathy married in 1990, and just celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary.
Jim was extremely dedicated to the field of law. He served in private practice for
almost 30 years with Locke Reynolds LLP and Frost Brown Todd, focusing on the
litigation needs of the business community in the areas of intellectual property,
competition, and media law. He then joined the American Bar Association as
Deputy Executive Director and recently assumed the role of General Counsel. He
served as President of both the Indiana State Bar Association and Indianapolis Bar
Association, and as a member of the Indiana Supreme Court’s Pro Bono
Commission. He was recognized as one of the “Best Lawyers in America” and was
named a Kentucky Colonel in 2002.
Jim also cared deeply about his alma mater, attending Little Giant football games and providing
guidance to his local fraternity chapter, and the Orthodox Church, serving on the parish council
and making sure the beer kept flowing at the Greek Festival. More than anything though, his
family was his number one priority. His kids’ interests were his interests – somehow he was
equally excited about the intricacies of foreign policy, soccer strategy, and actuarial models and
tests. He was the number one fan at every sports game his kids played, from rec, travel, and
college soccer to Greek basketball, as well as in their personal and professional lives. He even
tolerated Kathy’s never-ending lists! Though we often questioned his fashion sense – often
sporting a white polo tucked into sweatpants or basketball shorts and white New Balance tennis
shoes – we never questioned his support for us. He provided an enduring example of how to be
a dedicated and loving partner in marriage with Kathy, and the importance of hard work and
living by one’s values.
As accomplished and distinguished as he was, he also loved to have a good time. He spent the
last several years trying to check every state off his travel bucket list and checking off a few
countries as well. Not one for the great outdoors, he still tried – going so far as to take his
children camping (in the backyard…) and was sure to capture all of these moments with a
slightly awkward selfie.
Jim is survived by his wife, Kathy, his children Stephanie, Jennifer, and Jonathan, his brothers
John and Chris, in-laws, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, colleagues and
reluctant lap dog Wendy.
