Jake Hurt

Jake “Doc” Hurt, 92, of Indianapolis, passed away November 12^th, 2022. He was born September 13^th, 1930, in Kentucky to parents Jake and Hazel (Levi) Hurt.

Jake spent his childhood in Kentucky, then moved to Indianapolis where he began his career at Ford. He worked as a painter there for over 30 years before retiring.

In 1956, Doc married the love of his life, Marie Farris. They shared 64 wonderful years together. Marie passed away in March 2021, just shy of their monumental 65th anniversary.

Doc’s faith was paramount for him. He was truly a Man of God. Although he didn’t call himself a preacher, he was the head of Bethany Baptist Mission. He selflessly wanted to spread warmth and happiness to everyone he met. Always quick with a joke, Doc had a magnetic energy about him.

He was always a huge fan of baseball, playing it when he was younger, watching it as he got older. Doc loved spending time with Marie, going out to eat. He and Marie were very proud of their flower beds and gardens where they grew every type of vegetable imaginable. Family and friends always looked forward to Doc’s canned goods—salsa, blackberry jam, sweet corn, etc.

He was a devoted husband, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Doc is survived by his siblings Robert (Joy) Hurt, Richard Hurt, and Marsha (Roosevelt) Owens; sister-in-law Nancy Hurt; Nephew Jamie, and numerous other nieces and nephews, and great- nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Marie; siblings Harold (Christine), Wilbur (Josephine), David, Violet, Eleanor, Joyce, Nancy, and Charlotte.

Doc’s visitation will be Monday November 21^st, at Flanner Buchanan Washington Park East from 10-12pm. His funeral will begin at 12pm. He will be laid to rest at Washington Park East Cemetery.
