Jack Henry Winter, 99, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away on February 4, 2022. He was born on November 22, 1922, in Indianapolis.
After high school, Jack went on to honorably serve in the United States Army during World War II where he rose to the rank of Sergeant. Jack was particularly proud of his service as a member of the First Infantry Division (“Big Red One”) while participating in several significant European Theater Campaigns including Sicily, Normandy (D-day) and the Battle of the Bulge. Upon discharge in 1945, Jack received an impressive six Bronze Battle Stars.
Following his service, Jack married the first love of his life June Schenck and the two raised three boys Stephen, David and Mark. Jack dedicated his career to precision machining where he worked for several companies specializing in plastic injection mold making.
Following the tragic loss of June to cancer, Jack met Essie Glenn, the second love of his life. The two married in 1992 and raised three boys Barry, Garry and Kenneth, and two girls Tonya and Vickie.
He was a loving father and spent much of his time with family. He especially loved his pets, but Thor, his late German shepherd, always held a special place in his heart.
He is preceded in passing by Alfred Simon and Mary Esther (Glover) Winter (parents); Alfred S. Winter Jr. (brother); S. June (Schenck) Winter (wife); Barry Hall (son) and Vickie Hall Steward (daughter).
Jack is survived by his beloved wife, Essie L. (Glenn) Winter; children, Stephen (Jeanne) Winter, David Winter, Mark (Phyllis) Winter, Garry (Amy) Hall, Kenneth (Tammy) Hall, Tonya (Gary) Barth. He is also survived by thirty loving grandchildren, thirty-six great grandchildren and eleven great-great grandchildren, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 10, 2022, from 3-7PM with funeral services the following day, Friday, February 11th at 11AM all held at Flanner Buchanan – Memorial Park, 9350 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46229. Burial to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in loving memory to the Human Society of Indianapolis and/or the American Cancer Society.
