Iver F. Small was born in 1923 in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada to parents John and Margaret Small with one older brother, Jack. Iver married Joyce Graham in 1954. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and two children, Douglas and Mona. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Joyce Small, sons, Michael and Jeffrey (Susan), and granddaughter, Jenna. Iver received a BA from University of Saskatchewan in 1951 and MD from University of Manitoba in 1954. He had residencies in Psychiatry in Manitoba and Michigan and received a MS from University of Michigan in 1959. Iver practiced academic psychiatry in Portland, Oregon and Washington University, St. Louis before coming to Indiana in 1965. He serviced as Medical Director of Larue D. Carter Memorial Hospital for 35 years, and he received Sagamore of the Wabash for service to the State in 1982. Iver was a faculty member of the Department of Psychiatry achieving rank of full professor in 1969. He was active in medical student teaching, authored several textbooks and films on medical education, and published more than 100 scientific papers many in collaboration with his wife Dr. Joyce Small. He was active in numerous scientific groups and served as president of the Indiana Psychiatric Society and the Society of Biological Psychiatry. He founded a nonprofit corporation to generate funds for the advancement of mental health research and education which provided support for numerous student and faculty endeavors and included named professorships for the IU Department of Psychiatry, one of which bears his and his wife’s names. ___________________________________________________ Joyce G. Small was born in 1931 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the only child of Earl and Rachel Graham. She married Dr. Iver Small in 1954. See info above. Joyce was an outstanding student; she was awarded Governor General of Canada medal for high school scholarship. She received a BA from University of Saskatchewan summa cum laude in 1951 and MD from University of Manitoba in 1956 at the head of her class. She completed residency in Psychiatry in Michigan and received a MS from University of Michigan in 1959, before completing a fellowship in electrophysiology at University of Michigan in 1960. She was a violinist and played in the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra in Canada and the Plymouth Symphony in Michigan. Joyce practiced academic psychiatry in Departments of Psychiatry and Neurology at University of Oregon and Washington University before coming to Indiana in 1965. She served as Director of Research at Larue D. Carter Memorial Hospital for nearly 40 years developing nationally recognized programs of clinical and electrophysiological research, and she authored more than 200 scientific publications. Joyce held the rank of Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine since 1969. She was active in many scientific groups including review committees of the National Institute of Mental Health and editorial boards of several scientific journals. She received Career Awards from Indiana University School of Medicine and EEG and Clinical Neuroscience Society. She is named on endowed professorships in Canada and Indiana.
