Howard Rae Nixon, age 92, of Indianapolis, passed away on February 20, 2025. He was born on June 3, 1932, on the family farm in Falmouth, Indiana, in Rush County. Howard was the youngest of six children born to Luther D. and Myla Gordon Nixon.

Howard graduated from Raleigh High School and married Norma J. Huffman in September 1950. Together, they had two daughters, Deborah J. Burkhard of Carmel and Teresa L. Clark (John) of Spring, Texas.

Raised with a strong work ethic and a deep concern for others, Howard carried these values throughout his life. While he initially considered following in his father’s footsteps as a farmer, he instead enlisted for a four-year tour with the U.S. Air Force. After completing basic training in New York and Missouri, he was assigned to personnel duty at Davis-Monthan Air Base in Tucson, Arizona, until his honorable discharge in 1955.

Upon returning to Indianapolis, Howard pursued his education at Indiana Central Business College, earning a degree in Accounting while working at the Supply Depot at Fort Benjamin Harrison. His career began at Love Sheet Metal Corporation, followed by nine years at Wolf & Company. After earning his CPA licensure, he established his own firm, Nixon Financial & Investments, working independently for over 50 years before retiring last November. Howard loved helping his clients, family, and friends with their financial needs.

In his free time, he enjoyed playing euchre with friends and had a passion for feeding the birds, ducks, and deer that visited his beautiful backyard. Throughout his life, he was active in his community, serving as an officer in the Lawrence Jaycees (JCs) and as president of his neighborhood association for many years.

In September 1979, Howard married Helen von Foerster, with whom he shared many happy years until her passing in 2017. In later years, he found companionship and happiness with his dear friend, Lois Smith.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, James and Ralph Nixon of Connersville, his sisters, Ellen Meyer of Cincinnati, Edna Lower of Rushville, and Velma James of Fort Worth, Texas, and his stepdaughter, Cheryl von Foerster of Indianapolis.

He is survived by his daughters, as well as stepchildren: Michael (Maria) of Bloomington, Cynthia of Indianapolis, Steve (Kathy) of Birmingham, Michigan, Craig (Tamara) of Rogersville, Missouri, and Suzanne von Foerster of Indianapolis. He was a proud grandfather to Elizabeth Burkle of Indianapolis, Aaron Clark of Houston, Texas, and Laura (Aaron) Funk of Spring, Texas, Zach von Foerster of Chicago, Nick (Caily) von Foerster of Kansas City, Mo, Ellen (Zach) Rabideau of Royal Oak, Michigan, Anna (Will) Haley of Austin, Texas, and Julie von Foerster of Washington D.C. He was a beloved great-grandfather to Isabel, Andrew, John Burkle, Landon, Olivia, and Savannah Funk, Micah von Foerster, Tatum and Rosie Rabideau, and Miles Haley; and uncle to many nieces and nephews. Howard will also be deeply missed by his cherished cat, Charlie.
