Herman Harold Amonett, 94, went to his heavenly home on February 16, 2025. He was a selfless, giving man with a heart of gold. His compassion, generosity, happiness, and the constant smile on his face will be deeply missed. Mentos will always remind us of him.
Harold was born on June 28, 1930, to the late Robert Andrew & Lilly Jane (Story) Amonett in Byrdstown Tennessee. His family moved to Indianapolis when he was 12. He attended Manual High School, graduating in 1950. He worked as a maintenance mechanic at Borden Milk Company. He never missed a day for over 40 years and retired in 1991 when they closed.
While working at Borden's, Harold met his future wife, Frances VanderBaan. They married on September 4, 1954. They celebrated 70 years of marriage this past year. Together they raised three children. They were members of Christian Park Reformed Church for over 60 years and Good Shepherd Methodist Church for over 10 years.
He served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was able to go on the "Honor Flight" to Washington DC in 2022 with his son Dan.
Harold's work ethic was one of his defining characteristics. Even after retiring, he would remain very active. He enjoyed helping friends and family doing remodeling, yard work, tinkering in his workshop, building bridges and other projects. He also loved working on his "honey do list" and miscellaneous projects.
He loved to travel with his family. Every year they would go on a vacation to visit somewhere in the US. His traveling around the US stopped with the purchase of a boat. This was when his love for Dale Hollow Lake really began. The family spent many weekends and summers boating and learning what was below the water which covered his boyhood home. He also enjoyed going to St. Petersburg Beach at least twice a year with Frances for 30 years. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Most of all he will be remembered for his Christian nature and how he made everyone feel at home. He never knew a stranger in his life and would help anyone who needed it.
Harold is survived by his loving wife Frances, children Daniel Amonett (Sharon), Shirley Goode, and Cheryl Mayhew (Rick): grandchildren Amy Krahl (Kenneth), Becky Courtoy (Jason), Christi Russ (Tyler), Russell Goode (Meghan), Casey Goode (Brianna), Amanda Gore (Brandon), Shelby Mayhew, and Kendall Teague (Quinn), as well as 13 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Maurice and Gene (Jackie). His brother Harty "Ted" preceded him in death.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East (10722 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46229) from 12 pm – 2 pm, with funeral services held at 2 pm. Entombment will follow at Washington Park East Cemetery.
