Herbert “Herb” Oliver passed into God’s arms Friday, July 20, 2018. He was born on the West side (Haughville) in 1923, the fourth son of Robert E. Oliver and Blanche Smith Oliver. Herb fought battle in WWII in Europe (1943 – 1946) where he met Helen Marketich, a WAC (Women’s Army Corp) also in Europe. Their dates consisted of motorcycle rides in Vienna, Austria. They returned to civilian life in 1946, married and moved back to Indianapolis. Herb worked first for the City of Indianapolis, then Indiana Bell Telephone where he retired from in 1982. Herb’s passions were his houseboats, then later, his motorhomes.
Herb was extremely proud of the fact that he was a descendant of the first settlers in Marion County – the McCormick family of which there is a plaque near the White River bridge on West Washington Street.
Herb is predeceased by his parents, Blanche and “Bob”, siblings Walter, Opal, Edward, and his wife, Helen. He is survived by Norman (Mary Ann) Oliver of Dallas, Texas and Kristina (Jerry W) Wilcher of Indianapolis along with cherished grandchildren, Nathan, Aaron, Tracy, and Craig. Herb was blessed with four great grandchildren, Eli, Noah, Sara, Jane and thoroughly enjoyed the pictures, stories, and videos provided in the past several years of these wonderful children. We are all very thankful for today’s technology.
Both Helen and Herb were always amazed at the accomplishments, care, and healing given by the Shriner’s Hospital. Please, rather than flowers, donate to Shriners Children’s Hospital.
