Helen R. Spitzhoff, 98 of Carmel, passed away Friday, February 23, 2018. Helen was born May 12, 1919 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Andrew and Carmela Masia. A graduate of Girls Commercial High School, she worked as a secretary for various companies in Manhattan including the New York City Transit Authority. She was a resident of Bellerose in New York City until June of 2004, when she and her husband moved to Carmel.
Helen cherished the friendships she left in New York and the new ones she made after moving to Carmel. She enjoyed the New York Yankees, family pets, classical music, opera, reading novels, watching movies and spending time with her family. She greatly enjoyed the trips she took to Italy, Mexico and the Southwestern United States.
Family and friends are invited to gather from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Monday, February 26 at Flanner Buchanan-Carmel. Eulogy at 10:20 AM, with the funeral Mass immediately following on Tuesday, February 27 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, of which she was a member.
Helen was the widow of August “Gus” Spitzhoff, to whom she was married for 56 years. She is survived by her daughters, Donna S. (husband, Bob) Hill and Katherine (husband, Dennis Coluccio) Spitzhoff; grandchildren, Katherine and Justin Hill; step grandchildren, Denise Coluccio and Matthew (wife, Heather) Coluccio; step great grandchildren, Nicolas Roa, Addy Roa, Michael Roa, Gus Coluccio and Ruby Coluccio; and her much-loved cat companion, Rusty.
The family wishes to thank the caring staff at Sunrise on Old Meridian and Great Lakes Caring Hospice for the exceptional care and companionship they provided.
