Helen Joan Middleton Dickinson, age 88, was born on March 3, 1934, in Indianapolis, IN to Charles L. Middleton and F. Lorraine Scott.
She attended Broad Ripple High School, graduated from Butler University, BA, where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She also attended the English Country School, London, one semester to pursue her interests in Interior Design and History.
Her business interior design fit with her many volunteer activities. The organizations that she was a member in where the Indianapolis Junior League, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Indiana Society of Colonial Dames, the Indiana Society of Pioneers, the Arbutus Garden Club, the Newfields Horticultural Society and Alliance, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Caroline Harrison Chapter, the Indianapolis Symphony Society North Group, the Fortnightly Club, and the Lambs Club. She was Vice Precinct Committee Chairman for the Republican Party and a Girl Scout leader.
Her hobbies were genealogy, published 4 volumes on family history, Bridge Life Master games, reading, sewing, travel, cooking, needlepoint, and gardening, in which she was a Master Gardener and Landscape Critics Council member.
Her greatest joys were traveling with her husband and friends, pursuing sports activities with her daughters, horse competitions, tennis, ice skating, skiing, and her English Cocker Spaniels.
Helen is survived by her brother John Middleton, sister Judith Starkey, daughters Leigh Dykema, Lisabeth Armstrong, and Laura Lewis, grandchildren Rebecca Dykema Luciani, Anna Dykema Braun, Gwendolyn Dykema O’Connor, J. Mikael Armstrong, Henry Armstrong, Dean Shilts, R. Morgan Shilts, and Eleanor Shilts Tarr. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Richard, grandsons William Armstrong and Peter Dykema, and her parents.
A memorial service will be held at Meridian Street United Methodist Church, 5500 N Meridian St., Indianapolis, IN 46208, followed by a reception in the Parlor on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at 11:30am. Private Family Burial will take place at Washington Park North Cemetery, 2702 Kessler Blvd. W. Dr., Indianapolis, IN 46228.
