Helen F. Rudesill died on December 13th in Indianapolis, Indiana. Helen was born in Washington, Indiana on July 15, 1925 to Helen Frances Black and Charles Austin Black. She graduated from Washington High School and completed her B.S. Degree at Butler University in 1949 with a degree in Elementary Education. In 1947 she married Robert L. Rudesill, M.D. Helen is survived by R. Charles Rudesill of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Geoffrey H. Rudesill of Plano, Texas; and a daughter, Barbara A. Kleinschmidt of Fishers, Indiana. She has five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Predeceasing her is her brother, Charles Austin Black, Jr. and sister, Barbara Ann Gilkison.
Helen taught first and second grades for one year at Park School in Indianapolis and then actively served in many community organizations. She believed volunteers contribute a great deal to their community and make it a better place in which to live. She was president of Stansfield Circle, (one of the oldest service groups in Indianapolis); President of the Parent/Teacher Associations at Indianapolis Public Schools 84 and 86; and served on the Board of the Marion County Medical Auxiliary. Helen was President of the Auxiliary of the Paul Coble American Legion Post, involved in awarding nursing school scholarships. Helen was a member of the Indianapolis Propylaeum, the Indianapolis Day Nursery Junior Auxiliary and the Contemporary Club. She was proud to serve as Past Regent of the Caroline Scott Harrison Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.
Helen was a dedicated member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where she served on the vestry, altar guild and taught Sunday School for over 50 years.
She expressed the strong conviction that there is great value and merit in what music brings into our lives, as shown in her devotion to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, where she served as Chairman of the Indianapolis Symphony Association and also on the Board of Directors. In addition, she served for many years on the Board of the Ensemble Music Society of Indianapolis and was Chairman of the Indiana Aspen Music School Scholarship Committee.
Visitation will be at Flanner Buchanan-Broad Ripple, 1305 E. Broad Ripple Ave., Indianapolis from 4-8pm on Thursday, December 20. A funeral service will be at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 6050 N. Meridian St. Indianapolis, at 11a.m. on Friday, December 21st. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Music Society of Indianapolis and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
