Harold Raymond Walter

Avon

Harold Raymond Walter, residing in Avon, IN, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 16, 2020 after a valiant fight with oral cancer. He was 65 years old.
Harold was born in Rensselaer, IN to parents Robert and Tennis Walter on May 16, 1955. He grew up working on the family farm and graduated from Rensselaer High School in 1973.
As an active member of the Indiana Rural Youth program, Harold met life-long friends and had life-changing experiences, including meeting Janet K. Hopken during a multi-state Rural Youth Convention in South Dakota. Harold and Janet were married in Rensselaer, IN in 1980 and welcomed their daughter, Amanda Walter, in 1983.
Harold’s mechanically inclined nature allowed him to excel at a variety of different jobs: working at the Vault company in Rensselaer, IN; tire repair mechanic at Farm Bureau Co-op in Rensselaer, IN; technician/service manager for Culligan Water in Rensselaer, IN then Martinsville, IN; and manufacturing plant floor supervisor through Rexam in Franklin, IN.
Outside of work, Harold was passionate about nature and helping others whenever he could. His favorite hobbies included fishing, camping, sitting in the backyard watching the birds and enjoying the breeze, gardening, grilling, enjoying a campfire with the camaraderie of friends, and volunteering with the Boys and Girls Club in Bloomington, IN. Harold’s most fulfilling ventures, however, involved watching his daughter grow up and supporting her through college and medical school.
Harold is survived by his daughter, Amanda Walter; his brothers Bob, Tom, and Russell Walter; his sister MaryAnn Stockberger; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by infant siblings Paul Allen and Helen Jean Walter; and parents Robert and Tennis Walter.
Though Harold was a social man, he never liked being the center of attention; per his wishes, there will be no services. He is to be cremated, and his ashes will be released near the family farm at a future date. Those who wish to gather in memory of Harold are welcome to attend a Celebration of Life event, details of which will be forthcoming.
Because Harold loved nature, the family asks that any who wish to honor his memory plant a tree in lieu of flowers.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the hospice team from Elara Caring, especially Kassandra, Denise, Jon, Shelby, Rachel, Hannah, and Jason for their dedicated care. Thanks also goes to The Hearth at Prestwick Assisted Living community and Life’s Journey Hospice facility in Avon, IN.
“The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Ye’a, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou prepares a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.” Twenty-Third Psalm
