Harold Martin (Marty) Storm, Jr.
Born in Elgin, IL on August 19, 1939 to Harold and Jennie Storm. He attended grade school at Nancy L. Hill School and attended High School at West Aurora High School graduated in 1957 where he played the coronet in the high school band.
During Marty’s younger years he was a newspaper boy in Aurora, IL where he grew up. He worked hard and became an Eagle Scout in May 1955. In his upper teen years he worked (after school and on Saturday’s) at Wick’s gas station pumping gas, fixing tires, oil changing, etc. On Saturdays he would wash customers cars and trucks to earn extra money to save for his trip in the near future to Indianapolis to attend Lain Tech.
In 1961 Marty left Aurora to come to Indianapolis and studied Architectural Drafting. He graduated three years later in 1964 from Lain Technical Institute in Indianapolis.
In 1965 he married and had two fine children, Rodney and Marcia.
The marriage lasted 11 years.
He had already been ice skating so he got back into it and started competing in ice dancing with his skating partner Nancy. They competed in many competitions and did very well, winning some of the competitions.
Marty has enjoyed 50 years of working at the Indy 500 races each year. When he and his present wife were trying to come up with a date in May for their wedding, he said to her “Pumpkin, pick any day except for the days I’m scheduled to work the track”. Needless to say a day was found.
He started at the track as a silver badge, 3rd turn infield safety employee. After some years he became a “Gold Badge” and towards the end of his employment he was a “Commander” working the same area as he had been doing for decades, and enjoyed it all.
He also had 50 years working ice shows and stage shows when they came to town. Since his love for ice skating was always present, he got into working in wardrobe for “Ice Capades” which later went to the “Disney Shows on Ice”. He enjoyed this kind of work so much, he got into working the stage shows as well (ie Phantom of the Opera, Cats, etc.). The International and Canadian Stage Show and Ice Show Union has made Marty a life-time member of the union (in great standing) for these stage shows and ice shows. This honor was presented to him on February 25 by Joann Sanders, head of the Union for Indianapolis, and was bestowed upon him 45 minutes before he passed away. Marty was able to see the award and acknowledge his acceptance by tapping his finger into the hand of his wife.
During these 50 + years he was also on the same bowling team and his team has had 50 years of fun and some actual 1st place finishes at years end.
In 1991 he married the love of his life-Mary Storm.
After retiring he continued to do side work for the Architectural Draftsmanship degree he graduated with from Lain Technical Institute. He did side work for auto dealerships along “Auto Row” on 96th street. Servicing the majority of the doors, frames and hardware on those dealership buildings and continued to help them when they had door or lock problems.
He also had plans to finish his Model T automobile and finish four rooms in their new home, but became more and more tired so that these were not done but it did not matter because we know that Marty is watching us from above, and it would be a safe bet to say that he is sizing up these situations and figuring out a plan to get them done. People who knew him can be pretty sure of that.
He will forever be in the hearts of many, especially family, as a true good guy and a gentle old soul.
