Guillermo B. Fernandez, 86 of Carmel, passed away Sunday, April 30, 2017. Guillermo was born March 26, 1931 in Palma Soriano, Cuba. Before leaving Cuba, he was a professional baseball player and owned a restaurant.
After Guillermo came to America in 1961, he worked as a machinist for Wolfe & Swickard, Ransburg Corp and Koenig Bauer Egenolf Machine, Inc. With his wife and children in attendance at the ceremonies, he became a US citizen in 1976. He and his wife relocated to Florida in 1991, spending their summers in Indiana. In 2012, they returned to live in Carmel, IN.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:30 pm Friday, May 5 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. A visitation for family and friends is scheduled from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, May 4 at the church, and on Friday from 11:30 until the time of the service.
Guillermo was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Anne, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage. He is survived by his children, Guillermo E. Fernandez (wife, Liz and kids, Isabel, Sophia, Gabriel, Grace and Natalie) Gloria E. Fernandez-Ortiz (husband, Pedro, son Dale Urban, II and granddaughter, Gloria Urban) Carlos J. Fernandez (wife, Beverly) Alicia L. Zaffiro (husband, Vincent and kids, Briana, Nicholas and Julianne); brother, Jose Fernandez. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jorge Fernandez.
