Gregory A. Bernhard

November 8, 1949 — October 18, 2024

Avon, IN

Gregory Allen Bernhard, 74, passed away peacefully in his home on October 18, 2024. Born in Beech Grove, IN, on November 8, 1949, to William and Erma (Daugherty) Bernhard, Greg grew up in Indianapolis, where he graduated from George Washington High School. It was there that he met the love of his life, Kathy Applegate.

Following high school, Greg proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps as a radio engineer during the Vietnam War. Upon his return, he married Kathy on March 10, 1973. Together, they built a life filled with love and adventure, raising two daughters while living in Indianapolis. Their marriage was a testament to devotion and joy, lasting until Kathy’s passing on November 10, 2014.

Greg’s passion for all things automotive was a driving force throughout his life. From building and racing his own cars and motorcycles to collecting rare memorabilia and attending racing events, Greg’s enthusiasm for the automotive world never waned. It wasn’t just a hobby—it was woven into his career as an educator and engineer.

After earning his mechanical engineering degree from Purdue University, Greg received numerous automotive accreditations, including the distinguished ASE Master Technician Certification. His love for teaching was evident at every stage of his career, whether educating high school and college students or corporate executives. A highlight of his career was helping design and teach the workings of the hydrogen car at GM—and getting behind the wheel for a test drive was a memory he cherished.

Above all, Greg’s heart belonged to his family. He never missed a birthday or holiday celebration, and Christmas was always extra special when Greg was involved. Family vacations to Florida brought him great joy, and he was also a devoted dog lover, sharing his life with many cherished pets and “granddogs” over the years. His presence was a constant source of love and support for those fortunate enough to know him.

Greg is survived by his daughters Heather Maloney and Melissa Gee, his sisters Janet Cox and Lisa Bernhard, several nieces and nephews, and countless close friends and relatives. His legacy of kindness, humor, and passion will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.

To honor Greg's vibrant spirit and his love for the beach, guests are invited to wear Hawaiian attire. Visitation will be 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, October 24, 2024, at Flanner Buchana – Speedway, with memorial service starting at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Indianapolis Zoological Society.
