Gertrude E. Henderson

Ms. Gertrude Emma Mitchell Henderson, daughter of K.C. Mitchell and Ida Bell Price Mitchell, was born on October 28, 1930 in Lexington, Kentucky. She graduated from Dunbar High School in Lexington and attended Homer G. Phillips Nursing School in St. Louis, Missouri.

At a young age, Gertrude accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and attended Main Street Baptist Church in Lexington. She was a member of University Methodist Church in Indianapolis and attended faithfully as long as her health allowed.

She was united in Holy Matrimony to Dr. John Henderson and of this union two children were born, Gregory and John Kevin.

Gertrude worked for many years and retired from the U.S. Department of Defense Construction and Supply at Fort Benjamin Harrison.

Affectionately called “Aunt Gertie”, she loved her family and was known as the “glue” that held her family together. She was a good mother and good Christian. She enjoyed socializing with her friends and was a long-time, well-known resident on Grandview Avenue.

Ms. Gertrude Emma Mitchell Henderson departed this life on December 11, 2017 at the age of 87 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Louise, brothers Thomas and Osborne and her son, John Kevin.

She leaves to cherish her memory of her son, Dr. Gregory Henderson, her cousin Billie Jean Wilson of San Antonio, Texas, a host of nieces and nephews as well as many cherished friends.

God saw the road was getting weary

The hill was hard to climb;

He gently closed your loving eyes

And whispered “Peace Be Thine.”
