Gerald “Jerry” Gene Gillespie, 83, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away peacefully on September 23, 2019. He was born April 11, 1936 to Joy and Mable Gillespie; the youngest of five children.
Jerry was a 1954 graduate of Ben Davis High School. It was there he began seeing the love of his life, Margaret Miller, though the two met when they were only in 3rd grade. The high school sweethearts married on April 30, 1955 and spent 51 beautiful years together until Margaret’s passing on December 2, 2006; they remained deeply in love at the time of her passing. He was a supervisor at Eli Lilly; a career he faithfully served in until his retirement in 1993. He rejoined the workforce in 1995 driving school buses for Avon Transportation, serving the district for 16 years until his retirement in 2011. Jerry loved motorcycles, especially his Goldwing, and traveling. He was particularly fond of Oklahoma, a destination he would visit every summer to spend time with family. Jerry also loved his dogs; he leaves behind his mini-dachshund, Grace. Family remembers him as a caretaker, he always made sure everyone was safe, happy, and healthy; his big heart had room for all. His passing leaves an empty space in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to meet him, he was truly one of a kind and a wonderful example of how we should unconditionally love others.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joy and Mable; loving wife of 51 years, Margaret; as well as numerous family members. Surviving to carry on his legacy are sons, Michael (Josie) and Steven (Bridget); brother, Harlan; grandchildren, Stephanie, Benjamin, and Nicholas; great-grandchildren, Cooper and Leanor; as well as a host of extended family members and friends.
