George Robert Wright

September 14, 1939 — February 4, 2022

Greenfield, IN

George Robert (Bob) Wright, 82, of Greenfield passed away Friday, February 4, 2022. He was born in 1939 to William and Esther Wright of Middletown, Indiana. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ball State University and Doctor of Jurisprudence from the Indiana University School of Law. Bob also served in the U.S. Navy.

Bob was a skilled drummer and loved jazz music. As a teenager, he was a member of the Middletown High School Marching Band, and he played in a jazz trio which would perform at events in the Anderson area. He also performed with the Navy Recruit Training Command Band.

In November 1976, he opened a private law practice specializing in Social Security disability appeals. He would continue to assist his clients in this area for more than four decades.

He took active roles in his community, coaching his daughters’ softball teams for many years and helping to coordinate the display of luminaries in his neighborhood during the holiday season.

Bob was an expert woodworker, as could be seen from his construction of Windsor chairs for  family and friends. In fact, after several trips to the Windsor Institute in New Hampshire, he was inducted into its Chairmaker Hall of Fame in 2011 – and was known there as “Sir George”.

He was also an avid road bicyclist, organizing two bike tours across Ireland as well as participating in several Hilly Hundreds and RAGBRAI, a ride across Iowa, twice.

But Bob considered his greatest accomplishments being a father and a grandfather.

Growing up in the country gave Bob an appreciation for nature that never left him. He often pointed out how the sky is different every time you look, and he loved watching the trees change colors each autumn.

And one of his favorite pastimes was a simple one: watching a good rain or snow storm outside his front window, with a cup of coffee in hand and Bill Evans tunes playing in the background.

Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judith Anne Wright, and sisters Wilma Adamson, Donna Huse, and Betty Linville.

He is survived by his daughters Holly (husband Christopher) Simon and Hilary Wright; grandchildren Olivia, Joel, and Andrew Simon; and brothers William (wife Patty) Wright, Don (wife Bonnie) Wright, and Lonnie Marks.
