George Michael Butler, 77, died Tuesday, July 18, 2017. He was the only child born to George and Dorothea Dagey Butler on April 10, 1940, in Indianapolis. He served in the United States Airforce from March, 1959 until January 1963, where he was a B-52 Bomber mechanic. In 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, Mike had to upload atomic weapons so the bombers could take off at a moments notice. The Airforce would have extended his commission, had the crisis not been averted. He became a reservist from January 1963 until he was honorably discharged in March 1965.
While stationed in Blytheville, Arkansas, he met, fell in love with and married the girl of his dreams, Stella Dawn Perry on February 3, 1962. They then decided to move to Indianapolis, in January 1963, where Mike was born and his parents still resided. On his birthday, April 10, 1964, they welcomed their first daughter, Sherri Ann. Then, six years later, on January 23, 1970, they welcomed their second daughter, Angela Lyn. Mike was a loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather. On September 30, 1990, he became the proud grandfather to the first of three grandsons, Scott Aaron Roberts (9/30/1990), Zachary Thomas Spencer (4/5/1993) and then Austin Michael Roberts (1/11/2000). To say that Mike was over the moon with 3 grandsons was an understatement, that was the icing on the cake. Mike and Stella celebrated 55 wonderful years of marriage in February 2017. Mike had attended and been a member at the Church at the Crossing, since 1974 where he served the lord, until he passed away. Mike and Stella enjoyed many travels as a family and with their friends. Since he was an avid photographer, he documented just about every moment or milestone in their lives, with 30-40 photo albums to prove it. Anyone who knew Mike, knew how much he loved The Indianapolis Motor Speedway, The Indianapolis 500 and of course The Brickyard 400. These too, were captured on film, from his weeks spent out at the race track during the months of May or August.
Mike worked for Kroger’s for 45 years, he started out as a bag boy before he entered the service and returned to Kroger’s afterwards, he was a Kroger manager until had to retire at the age of 62, due to Parkinson’s Disease.
He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his surviving wife, Stella, his two daughters, Sherri Butler (Spencer), Angela Butler (Roberts), Son-in-law, Scott Roberts, his three grandsons, Scott Aaron Roberts, Austin Michael Roberts and Zachary Thomas Spencer.
The funeral service will be held on Sunday, July 23,2017 at 2:30pm at the Church at the Crossing, 9111 Haverstick Road, Indianapolis, IN with visitation one hour prior and burial immediately following at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rocky Steady Boxing or The Parkinson’s Foundation.
