George F. Defabis

George, 94 of Indianapolis, passed away at his home on July 20th. Born on March 4th, 1927 to Louis and Alice DeFabis. He graduated from Arsenal Tech High School in 1945. He was survived by his daughter Vicki (DeFabis) Spears, 6 grandchildren – Jason (Stacie), Shawn (Kathleen), Jeremy, Nicole (Rhea), Robert, and Lindsay (Patrick), 14 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren.

George was recently employed by Lucas Oil Stadium in guest services. He retired as a food broker from Dugan/Doss, Inc. after 19 years of service. George spent 76 years of his life contributing to the sport of boxing. He started in 1945 as an amateur boxer within the Indiana Golden Gloves and continued a brief professional boxing career. After finishing his career of boxing, he devoted the rest of his life to promoting boxing in Indiana. He was actively involved with the Indiana Golden Gloves until his death. He served on the board of directors for Indiana Golden Gloves in various capacities including President. He was selected to the National Golden Gloves Hall of Fame in 2006. He was also selected in the inaugural class of the Indiana Boxing Hall of Fame in 2018. He was a professional judge and referee and served on the Indiana Boxing Commission.

George was a veteran of the United States Navy and served as 3rd class petty officer during WWII.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years Eleanor (Koop), his parents (Louis and Alice), sister, son George L. DeFabis, son-in-law Steve, and cousins (Phil, Julio, Ernie, and Mike DeFabis).

Visitation will be held on Monday, July 26, 2021 from 10-1pm at Flanner Buchanan-Washington Park North 2706 Kessler Blvd West Dr. A funeral service will follow at 1pm. Memorial contributions may be donated to Indiana Golden Gloves Scholarship Fund 6401 Oxbow Way Indianapolis, IN 46220.
