George E Downton, Jr.

George E. Downton, Jr., 81 of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on April 25, 2018. He was born July 16, 1936 in Indianapolis, Indiana to George and Helen Downton.

He attended St. Anthony Catholic School and started his secondary education at Indiana State, but decided to take a different path. In September 1956, George enlisted in the Air Force. He would go on to serve 8 years as an Airman First Class, spending time in Alaska and Korea. He was proud to serve his country but he also possessed refined tastes. He was known as the family philosopher who loved reading. He was a witty jokester with an easy going personality. He was also amazingly creative, which he gracefully expressed through painting. Many of his pieces were gifted to his family; his legacy lives on through pieces of art.  George enjoyed music from ABBA to smooth jazz. Family also remembers him as being a great storyteller and WWII aficionado. To say he was one of a kind wouldn’t do this great man justice; he will be truly missed by all who had the honor of meeting him.

George is preceded in death by his parents, George and Helen; brothers Steve Downton and Mark Downton; son Tommy Downton. Surviving to cherish his memory are his children, Donald (Darla) Ramsey, George “Chip” E. Downton III, Tara (Joe) Worthy, Donna (Bob) Baker, Tamara (Al) Furlani, Carrie (Johnny) West, Andrew (Deana) Downton, Cynthia (Russ) Mefford, Lenora (Mark) Stevens; siblings, Dick (Helen) Downton, Frank (Paulette) Downton, Larry (Jill) Downton, Helen (Chuck) Dolder, Paul (Shirley) Downton, Bill (Loretta) Downton; 14 grandchildren and many loving great-grandchildren.

Friends and family may visit Sunday, April 29 from 2-6 PM at Flanner Buchanan – Floral Park, 425 N. Holt Road, Indianapolis 46222. A funeral mass will be held Monday, April 30 at 10 AM at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 337 N. Warman Ave., Indianapolis, IN  46222. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Riley Children’s Hospital or the Veteran’s Administration.
