George Bebawi was born in Cairo, Egypt on November 27th, 1938 and departed from Carmel, Indiana to be with the Lord on February 4th, 2021. He was married to Carol Rowe until 2001 and had three sons (Antony, Mark, and Daniel). He is grandfather of five (Sophia, Yasmin, Milo, Adam, and Shaun). He remarried in 2004 and is survived by his wife, May Rifka Bebawi.
George was a lifelong student and teacher. He received his Bachelor’s of Divinity in 1961 from the Coptic Orthodox Theological College in Egypt and an M.Lit. and PhD from Cambridge University in 1970. He taught theology, Church History, and Islam at universities and seminaries in the Middle East, Europe and the United States from 1970-2004. He was an advisor on Christian Affairs to Egyptian President Anwar al-Sadat and served on various committees of the World Council of Churches and the Secretariat for Christian Unity at the Vatican. He published more than 60 books and dozens of articles in Arabic and English and is internationally recognized as one of the world’s leading scholars on Eastern Christianity.
