Gene S. Newcombe, 93 of Carmel, passed away Thursday, December 30, 2021.  Gene was born November 21, 1928 in Windfall, Indiana to the late James S. and Grace E. Newcombe.  Gene graduated from Shortridge High School, where he was a member of the Dragon Club.

Gene went on to graduate from Indiana University where he was a member of Sigma Pi Fraternity.  He was the house song leader, a member of the Falcon Club, ran intramural track, he was vice president of the Jackson Club, president of 2 journalism fraternities, wrote for the Daily Student and was advertising manager for the Crimson Bull.  He was named Sigma Pi of the year in 2000 and inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2008.

Gene served in the US Army in the Medical Company 169th Infantry from 1952 to 1954.

Gene began his career with Broyhill Furniture in Chicago.  He owned the House of Meridian Fine Furniture and Design, 3 locations in Carmel, from 1959 to 1995.  He also operated Newcombe Estate Sales and Design from 1995 to 2015.

Gene was a member of the Rotary Club of Carmel and was its president 1983-1984.  He was a member of the Carmel Chamber of Commerce and Orchard Park Presbyterian Church, where he was a member of the choir, served as trustee and was on the building committee.

Gene was an active member of the Barbershop Harmony Society from 1962 to 2021.  He was chapter president 1969-1970, was Barbershopper of the Year in 1971 and 1972, district president 1974-1975 and International Board Member 1976-1977.

A memorial service celebrating Gene’s life will be held Saturday, April 30 at 11:00 am at Orchard Park Presbyterian Church, where family and friends are invited to gather from 9:00 am until the time of the service.

Gene was the widower of Linda.  He is survived by his children, Christine Newcombe and Miles Newcombe.  He was preceded in death by his siblings, Wade Newcombe, Carver Newcombe, Martha Reed, Mildred Barnette, Mary Linson and Bob Newcombe.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rotary International or the Barbershop Harmony Society.
