Gates Weller Pottorff passed peacefully at home in the arms of his loving parents on March 11, 2022. He was born on May 6, 2021, and immediately captured the hearts of his family with his beautiful blue eyes and adorable smile. Gates was diagnosed as an infant with developmental epileptic encephalopathy, caused by a novel mutation in the dynamin-1 (DNM1) gene. This extremely rare condition took Gates’ life far too soon, but in his ten short months here on earth, he touched the hearts of many. Gates was loved deeply by friends and family – particularly, his parents and doting big sisters, who admiringly introduced him to others as “my brother, Gatesy Weller.” Gates was sweet natured, and people gravitated towards his gentle demeanor, chubby rolls, and warm cuddles. He was a gift to all of us, and while the pain caused by his passing is immeasurable, he will always be celebrated, remembered and loved. Gates is the son of Greg and Laken Pottorff of Carmel, Indiana. Gates is survived by two sisters, Palmer (3) and Collins (2); maternal grandparents, Kent and Jennifer Kurtz; paternal grandparents Gary and Mary Lynn Pottorff; great-grandparents, Richard and Patricia Kurtz, and Dixie Dalton; aunts and uncles, Dalton Kurtz and Lauren Skinner, and Justin and Betsy Dammeier; and cousins, Makenna and Jackson Dammeier. In lieu of flowers we would be honored to have you support Riley Children’s Hospital by making a contribution to the Gates Weller Hospital Social Work Fund, so that other Riley families may be loved and supported as we were in our time of need. Donations may be submitted here. At the bottom of the Riley donation page, there is a required field asking donors to describe how to further restrict the gift. Please write in the Gates Weller Social Work Fund. Gates’ visitation will be held on Sunday, March 20 from 3-6 pm at Flanner Buchanan – Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, 9700 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, Indiana. Funeral services will be held at the same location on Monday, March 21, at 11 am.
