Gary Richard Piersall, Sr., 62, of Indianapolis passed away on Sunday, February 10, 2019.
He was born on May 11, 1956 in Indianapolis, to the late Paula (Fugate) Knowles. Gary relocated with his family several times, eventually moving back to the Indianapolis area where he attended school. He met the love of his life, Phyllis Jean Welch and they were married on November 27, 1972. Gary often mentioned that he was a “Jack of all trades, but master of none.” However, he could build anything and loved to be active and work with his hands. Even without a formal education he was able to provide a good life for his family through his construction work. Gary was well known as reliable and a hard worker, and he was sure to instill this same work ethic in his children. When he wasn’t working he could be found relaxing at the campground with a beer in his hand laughing and joking around with his friends. Gary never met a stranger, and always had a smile on his face, “Double Deuce” was a phrase those closest to him heard often. He also enjoyed playing the guitar, a skill that he taught himself. Gary’s greatest gift in life was his family; and he especially loved spending time with and supporting his grandchildren.
Gary is survived by his children, Gary (Jen) Piersall, Jennifer (Dan) Poynter, Paul Piersall; grandchildren, Alessia, Jazmyn, Jeremy, Gracie, Wes, Zach, Gavin, Ayvah. Gary is also survived by his step-father, James Herald; siblings, Betty Goodwin, Darrell Herald, Joann Myers, Kathy Matthews, Tony Herald, Pat Herald, Amy Hargrave. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; mother, Paula; step-father, Larry Knowles; and siblings, Jimmy Herald, Debbie Welch, Johnna Oakes.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 17, 2019 from 2-6pm at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East. Funeral services will take place the following morning at 10:30am, also at the funeral home. Gary will be laid to rest with his wife in Washington Park East Cemetery.
