Gary Eugene Short, 68 of Clermont, passed away on April 29, 2019. He was born to Clifton and Charlotte Short on January 31st, 1951 in Martinsville, IN.
In 1969 he enrolled in a tech school in Louisville, Kentucky and graduated as a certified electronics technician. This is where he also met Mike Skidmore, who would become his lifelong friend and brother he never had, Mike was there for every joy and pitfall life brought along the way until the very end.
He then enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1971, stationed in Thailand on the border of Cambodia. He was a missile specialist with the rank of Sergeant. He served from 1971-1975. His father inspired this great decision that Gary would always refer to as the turning point in his young life and made him realize what amazing things he could and did accomplish.
In 1978 he became a father with the birth of his daughter, Nicole Noella Short who was followed by another daughter, Natalie Elizabeth Short in 1982.
He graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Psychology and Biomedical Engineering in 1981. He would go on to work for many years at Indiana University Medical Center, Methodist Hospital, St Vincent Hospital and finally retiring from B.S.A. Life Structures in February of this year.
In 1987, he met Mary Sue Bushey, who would quickly capture his heart and become the love of his life. They first met each other at The Slippery Noodle INN, and this became a big part of their relationship. They soon married and celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary on February 16th, 2019.
Gary was proceeded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Mary of Clermont, IN; his daughters, Nicole and Natalie; five grandchildren, Lily, Christopher, Ava, Luke, and Caleigh, all of Noblesville, IN; his sisters, Lynn Roberts of Indianapolis, IN and Marcia Schweitzer of Cincinnati, Ohio; his brother-in-law, Paul Childress of Danville, IN; his nieces, Ann Popp of Cincinnati, Ohio, Shannon Pruitt and Crystal Childress, both of Avon, IN; his nephew, Scott Schweitzer of Columbus, Ohio; several great nieces and nephews, including Gabby Shorter of Avon, IN; and his best friend, Mike Skidmore of Fishers, IN.
He was a man of very few words with a heart full of compassion and love for those closest to him. His circle was small but mighty in support. If you were lucky enough to know him, REALLY know him, his eyes could speak for him at times…..good or bad. He was famous for his dramatic sighs of impatience or restlessness.
An avid racing fan along with his love, Mary they most enjoyed midget car, sprints, and champ dirt cars. It was a rarity for the two of them to miss a weekend at the track through the years. They never met a dirt track they didn’t love and were absolutely in their element as they cheered and laughed with friends who would became family in the stands.
Gary fought like the solider and tenacious man he always was till he took his last breath surrounded by his dearest and most loved on April 29th, 2019. His stoicism never left as many never knew he was ill. That was Gary, staunch and impenetrable. Cancer may have stolen his life much too soon but his spirit was never broken. Words could never express how much he is loved and missed by so many.
