G. James Dinkel
86, of Speedway passed away January 10, 2017. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska and graduated from the University of Nebraska where he met and married Virginia Littrell in 1952. He served in the US Army (Korean War) and worked nearly 30 years for Stokely Van Camp, then at Indiana Department of Corrections as a farm manager. He was an active member of the Speedway United Methodist Church. He was active in OASIS and AARP and volunteered for numerous years at the Indiana State Museum. For over 40 years he worked at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as a yellow shirt and a Gold badge at the 500, joining the Indianapolis 500 Old-timer's Club. He belonged for over 50 years to the Scottish Rite-Masons.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Virginia Dinkel; son Paul Dinkel; and his sister Annine Peacock. He is survived by his sons David Dinkel (Ale')and Gary Dinkel (Laurie)and daughter, Beverly Popham (Wayne); and grandchildren Rachel, Jacob, Rebecca, Jennifer and Carlos.He is also survived by his sister, Elise Barnhart.
A calling will be held Monday, January 16, 2017 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Speedway United Methodist Church—5065 W 16th Street. A memorial service for James will immediately follow at 3:00 pm.
