Fred L. Kautzman, 93, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2017. He was born in Lawrence, Indiana to F.G. and Lottie (Hancock) Kautzman on April 12, 1924. The epitome of a first-class gentleman, Fred was much loved and will be greatly missed by many friends and neighbors who cherished his kind, gentle and witty persona.
He was a proud member of the first graduating class at the “new” Lawrence Central High School in 1942, where he co-captained a real life “Hoosiers” type basketball team that ended its state tourney run one game shy of the Final Four. He then obtained his Bachelor of Science degree attending Butler University where he met Prom Queen Barbara Seeger. After serving in the US Army in World War II, he returned in 1947 to graduate and marry his college sweetheart – a love affair that would last for 70 years until her recent death.
Fred was a life-long insurance executive ultimately being elected as Vice President at American United Life. He then retired and formed Corporate Development Services, providing merger and acquisition services to clients across the United States and Canada. Fred was a member of the Life Underwriters Association and Sales and Marketing Executives International. An unapologetic Republican and precinct committeeman, he also enjoyed his affiliations in Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, the Scottish Rite, and Murat Shrine. Fred was a 50 year plus member of Meridian Street United Methodist Church.
An avid golfer and honorary captain of the “golfing Kautzmans”, he boasted not one but two hole-in-ones to his credit and taught his sons his love of the game. While often forced to travel extensively in his work, he also somehow managed to facilitate several other endeavors, including Nora Little League coach, manager, and League President.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Corwin and Byron, and his beloved wife, Barbara. He is survived by the sons that he adored – Steve (Linda), Richard (Michelle), and John (Katherine). He also dearly loved his two grandchildren, Alexandra (Tyler) and Christian, who he often said grew up way too fast to suit him- not surprising as he happily orchestrated their living room musical productions, red wagon parades, and difficult homework assignments.
But mostly he was the best dad imaginable – teaching his sons by example about diligent work and study habits; perseverance toward your goals; an appreciation of faith, humor, and good music; and how it was ok to say I love you.
Visitation will be held from 11am to 1pm on Monday May 15th at Flanner and Buchanan-Broad Ripple, immediately followed by the funeral service. Burial to follow at Union Chapel Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made on behalf of Barbara to the Alzheimer’s Association.
