Commander Frederick Moore Wielandt, USN, Ret, 83, of Fishers, Indiana, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2024, holding the hand of his beloved wife of 57 years, Patricia. He was born on June 5, 1941, in Bedford, Indiana, to parents, Frederick A. Wielandt and Constance (Moore) Wielandt.
He grew up embraced by his small community where he created lifelong friendships and legendary escapades (“borrowed” cars? midnight road trips? secret service visits? all yes). He graduated high school from Culver Military Academy, which he spoke of fondly even in his later years. He attended the US Naval Academy then went on to graduate from Indiana University, where he was a member of Sigma Chi and played soccer. He ultimately earned his Masters in Business and Human Resources from National University. He is remembered by friends from his youth for his sense of adventure, sharp wit, and keen intelligence.
After graduation he returned to the Navy where he began his lifelong military career, serving as a flight officer and ultimately earning the rank of Commander. He served two tours in Vietnam and was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. His service to his country defined his professional life, and he continued to work for the Department of Defense after his retirement from active military duty. In his civilian life, when not working on his crosswords, he forged strong community relationships wherever he was stationed and took great pride coaching youth and high school soccer and baseball. He especially loved his years coaching the Coronado High School Girls Soccer team.
In 1965, on a blind date, he met the love of his life, Patricia Masella. This quiet German Irish Protestant from small town Indiana was thrust into the orbit of a loud Italian Catholic from the big city in Jersey, and his world was never the same. They were married in 1967 and remained devoted until his passing. They were a shining example of love, humor, patience, and respect to their children, family, and friends. In 2002 Pat and Fred retired back to Indiana and settled into the life of enthusiastic grandparents and happily bickering soulmates.
Fred is survived by his loving wife, Patricia (Masella) Wielandt; children, Kristen (John)Gollnick and Frederick “Freddy” (Sara) Wielandt; grandchildren, Margaret, Miriam, Trip, Cooper, and Sadie.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
