Francis “Dick” Meara

98, of Indianapolis, passed away June 9, 2020. He was born on November 9, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois as the son of Richard and Evelyn Meara.

Dick attended and graduated from Hammond High School in Hammond, IN. After high school he served his country in the Army Air Corp. Returning from the war he followed the love of his life, Shirley, to Indianapolis. After moving to Indianapolis, Dick started working at RCA and worked there for 32 years until his retirement. It did not take Dick and Shirley long to enjoy the retired life where they were able to travel and enjoy time together. Dick though could not stay away from the work force though, after 10 years of retirement he went back to work. Dick enjoyed staying busy and wanted something to do. He took on various part-time jobs and continued working to just a few years ago. During their younger years, Dick and Shirley always enjoyed dancing together, and it was always a safe bet that on Friday and Saturday night that’s what they would be out doing. In more recent years, Dick was an avid sports fan. He loved IU. He enjoyed watching the Chicago Bears and the Indianapolis Colts. Reading was another one of Dick’s pastimes and has enough books for a small library. If he wasn’t watching sports you could most likely find him at home reading a book and sipping on his favorite drink, a gimlet cocktail. Though he enjoyed all of these things, his greatest love of all was his family. he will be loved and missed by all.

Dick is survived by his son, Richard Charles Meara (Sandra); granddaughter, Jessica Swett (Steve); and great granddaughter, Cassie; granddaughter Shannon Marsh (Corey); and great grandchildren: Anna, Lucas, Brooklynn, and Elijah; his son, Robert Phillip (Karen); granddaughter, Katie Jackson Meara Baldwin (Chris); great granddaughter Olivia; grandson, Jason McDaniel (Denise); great grandchildren: Alexis, Tyler, and Chase; and great great granddaughter, Evy; grandson, Anthony Cashman (Amber); great grandsons, AJ and Alex; and grandson Robbie, great grandchildren: Andrew, Cameron and SJ; granddaughters: Melissa Dixson and family and Kellie Shay and family.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Shirley; his son Thomas Kent Meara; and grandson RJ.

The family will be holding private services at Flanner Buchanan – Memorial Park.
