Born Frances Joanne Baggett to Myrtle and Rembert Baggett in Savannah, Georgia, November 18, 1929, Joanne grew up in the depression-era south. Moving to Dallas, Texas, she worked her way through Southern Methodist University by being a copywriter for an advertising agency. Enco’s, “Put a Tiger in Your Tank” was her idea. She married young Methodist minister George William Jones, then quit her job and school when her two sons came into the world. She was essential in raising the family out of poverty by careful management of the household, budgeting, and saving. After her sons were grown, Joanne returned to SMU to complete her degree. She eventually built her own commercial real estate business. She was a die-hard Texan until she moved to Indianapolis, Indiana much later in life to be with her oldest son, Chris, who survives her. She is also survived by her son, David, and grandchildren Meri, Graham, Rhiannon, Edit, Dori, and Sean. A celebration of her life will be conducted on January 18th 2020 at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 445 E. 111th St. Indianapolis, Indiana 46280 at 2 PM followed by a gathering at 619 E. Walnut St. Indianapolis, In. 46204. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Association at Alz.org would be appreciated.
