Floyd Russell Huckleberry, age 93, died on February 22, 2022, at Life’s Journey Hospice.
He was the fourth of eight children, born to Lorna and Howard Huckleberry in Washington County, Indiana. His siblings were Everett, Marion, Sylvia, Maurice, Avis Robert, Bruce, and Marvin. He spent his summers working in fields and picking corn, green beans, and tomatoes. This led to the certainty that he did NOT want a career in farming!
After graduation from Salem High School in 1948, Huck headed to the “big city” of Indianapolis and worked for Omar Bakery. Within a few years, he moved on to Sears, Roebuck and Company, where he held several different positions. He was a proud Sears employee until his retirement in 1989.
Huck’s life changed when he met a happy, curly-headed brunette, named Lucille Cogle. Lucy and Huck were married on August 31, 1952, at Lynhurst Baptist Church, where he remained a member. Cathy Sue was born in 1953 and Chris Allen in 1955. Huck and Lucy raised their family on the west side of Indianapolis.
After Huck’s retirement, he spent his time puttering in his garage, transplanting snapdragons, and admiring cars. He eventually took a job transporting new cars for local dealerships and loved every minute of it. Huck was a devoted family member and a humble man of faith. He was a kind, gentle man who was beloved by many.
Huck was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy; his son, Chris; brothers, Everett, Marion, Maurice, Bruce, and Marvin; and his parents. He is survived by daughter, Cathy Huckleberry; grandchildren, Joseph Roundtree and Rebecca Roundtree; sister, Sylvia Harrold; brother, A. Robert Huckleberry; daughter-in-law, Laurelanne Bellezzo; and several extended family members.
