Fern Ransom

Indianapolis

Fern J. Ransom, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2025, at the age of 93. Born on May 21, 1931, in Osgood, Indiana, she left an indelible mark on the lives she touched, balancing her remarkable career with a deep commitment to family and community.

Throughout her vibrant life, Fern exemplified hard work and devotion. She served as a stenographer for the FBI before embarking on a fulfilling 40-year career with Kroger, where she worked as a secretary in the advertising and real estate departments. Her strong work ethic earned her a reputation as a reliable and skilled employee, dedicated to her craft. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Fern was proud of her homecoming queen legacy, along with that of her beloved sisters, each of whom also wore the crown, creating a cherished family tradition.

Fern's talents extended far beyond her career. She was a phenomenal cook, known especially for her delicious Sunday dinners that brought joy to her loved ones. Her coffee cake, a family favorite, and the signature cake she baked for her children's birthdays became cherished memories that will last forever in the hearts of her family. Many happy days were spent at the lake house on Sweetwater Lake, where laughter and love filled the air during family getaways. Later she became a snowbird, heading south to soak up the sunshine during the winter months

Her personality was often described as that of the strong silent type—a reflection of her depth and resilience. Fern's love ran deep, and she effortlessly balanced the joys and challenges of motherhood and wifehood with grace and warmth. She was a devoted square dancer with Edgar, loved playing euchre, and delighted in travel. Fern's loving and strong presence will be profoundly missed.

At the heart of Fern's life was her family. She was a devoted and hardworking mother, nurturing her children with unconditional love.

Fern is survived by her daughter, Cheri O’Mara, and her son, Greg (Vicki) Ransom. Adding to her joy were her grandchildren Joshua (Megan) Ransom and Zachary (Chelsea) Ransom, as well as her great-grandchildren Alpha Ransom and Jersey Ransom, who brought her immense pride and happiness. Fern leaves behind her loving sisters, Beverly Rodewald and Miriam Curran, and her brother, Charles (Joyce) Dorrel, who will deeply mourn her loss.

Fern was predeceased by her loving husband, Edgar Ransom, with whom she shared a beautiful partnership and warm memories. She also grieves the loss of her beloved daughter, Pamela Ransom, her son-in-law, Daniel Omara, and daughter-in-law, Teri Ransom whose absence left an ache in her heart.

Visitation will be held on February 19, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM at Washington Park East, located at 10722 E Washington St, Indianapolis, IN 46229. She will be laid to rest at Washington Park East Cemetery.

The legacy of Fern Ransom will continue to live on through her children, grandchildren, and generations to come, embodying the love, strength, and compassion that she so beautifully exemplified throughout her life.
