Fannie Gipson

Fannie Lee Nibbs-Gipson (aka Mrs. G) was born on May 14, 1922 to the late Anna and Abner Nibbs Sr. in Mound Bayou, Mississippi.

Fannie arrived in Indianapolis, IN in 1936 and resided with her sister Pauline Nibbs-Gipson, where she attended Crispus Attucks High School. Fannie married Sylvester LeFlore and to this union one son was born. Fannie later married Avery J Gipson Sr. in 1948 and to this union four children were born.

Fannie accepted Christ at the age of 14 at New Liberty Baptist Church in Indianapolis. Fannie loved the lord and later moved her membership to Eastern Star Church in 1972. Fannie enjoyed attending church with her grandchildren every Sunday. Fannie was called by several names during her lifetime “Bobbie”, “Fannie Lee”, “Francis”, “Leona” and “Mrs. G.” Fannie worked at I.U. Hospital and retired from IPS Transportation in 1983.

Fannie nurtured her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and others. Fannie was an extended sister, aunt, mother, and grandmother to many. Fannie was an active listener that served as a source of encouragement and positive influence to everyone she met. Fannie will be remembered for her humor and favorite sayings: “1 James Brown, 1 Michael Jackson, and 1 Fannie Gipson and after that there will be no more.”; “Trying to make a 100 because 99 ½ won’t do”; and “The 1 and only Mrs. G.”

Fannie departed this life on March 29, 2018 at the age of ninety-five years ten months and fifteen days old. She was proceeded in death by her parents Anna and Abner Nibbs Sr.; brothers: Robert Nibbs Sr. and Abner Nibbs Sr.; sisters: Pauline Nibbs-Gipson, Mary Nibbs-Phillips, and Martha Nibbs-Motlow; and sons: James O’tic LeFlore and Ronnie Gipson.

Fannie is survived by her children: Avery J. Gipson Jr. (MaryAnn), Octavia Gipson-Williams (Cleo), and LaTanya K. Gipson-Taylor (Clarence): grandchildren Shantell, Janelle, Felicia, Alexandria, Brandon, Ronita, Bakari, Trae, Shabaka, Daniel, and Nefertiti: great-grandchildren Nyla, Christopher, LaTavia, Emani, Grace, Isaiah, Senica, and baby Leona: siblings James Nibbs and Addie Nibbs-Cain: sister-in-law Ceola Nibbs, best friend of 58 years Ruby Poindexter, and a host of relatives and friends.
