Fane Takas Hein, age 94, died quietly on Sunday, July 16, 2017, in Indianapolis. Fane was born on May 31, 1923, in New York, NY, and spent her childhood in Albany NY with her parents Demitrios and Maria Takas and older brother Andrew D. Takas, who all preceded her in death. She married Walter J. Hein on July 8, 1944, in South Bend IN. They lived together and reared their family in Ft. Wayne IN, and he preceded her in death in 1988.
Fane and her brother were first generation Americans; their parents were of Greek descent and became US citizens after immigrating to this country. She graduated from Albany High School in Albany, NY, and worked as a secretary at General Electric in Schenectady NY during World War II. She later earned an undergraduate degree and master’s degree from Indiana-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) and a master’s degree in social work from Ball State University. She was employed by IPFW for many years and retired as an associate faculty member of the anthropology and sociology department, where she founded and managed an undergraduate internship program in social services.
She is survived by her children, Catherine (David) Martin of Nashville IN, Al Hein (Barbara McKinney) of Bloomington IN, Andrew Hein of Indianapolis, Elizabeth (Frank) Akey of W. Lafayette IN, Patricia Warrick of Indianapolis, and Steven Hein of Uruguay. Also surviving are grandchildren Rebecca Martin, Seth Martin, Alison Akey, Andrea White, James Akey, Katherine Akey, David Warrick, Jay Warrick, Ross McKinney and great-grandchildren Kai, Quinn and Annaliese.
Fane had a lifelong passion for education and for understanding the cultures and practices of groups of people. When her children were growing, she volunteered with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts and hosted international students through AFS Intercultural Programs. She took an avid interest in those she met and regularly encouraged others to pursue higher education. She loved sewing, music, reading, and time with her family.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at Flanner and Buchanan-Broad Ripple, 1305 E. Broad Ripple Avenue, with the service beginning at 1:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to join the family for a memorial gathering afterwards at Aristocrat Restaurant, 5212 N. College Avenue.
