Evelyn Hestelle Higgins, 81, Indianapolis, IN went to her eternal home on November 19, 2020. Evelyn was born on September 1, 1939 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Juanita (Day) Eastham and Prentiss Eastham. Evelyn graduated from Ben Davis High School in 1957. Evelyn met her husband James Edgar Higgins while he worked at Westlake Golf Club and knew right away that she would be married to Jim. They were married on August 30, 1958 in Indianapolis. They lived briefly in Norfolk, Virginia while Jim served in the United States Navy before eventually moving back to Indianapolis where she worked for Indiana Bell as an operator then later worked at L. S. Ayres as a customer service representative. She also enjoyed working later at Cold Springs School in Indianapolis as a teacher’s aide. Evelyn was very involved in the activities of her children growing up supporting marching bands and sporting events. Evelyn also enjoyed doing volunteer work for Riley Cancer Research for Children and The Salvation Army where she also deployed with the Salvation Army during hurricane Katrina cleanup efforts. She also participated in packaging crew packages for the Salvation Army to send to military troops that were deployed in the middle east. Another one of Evelyn’s favorite activities were to bake and decorate Christmas Cookies over the last 14 years giving them away or donating them. Some of her other cherished things were watching Kim and her curling team and took a couple of trips together. Evelyn was a Life Member of Sigma Phi Gamma Sorority. She was involved in various ministries at Chapel Rock Christian Church where she and Jim were members. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents Prentiss Eastham and Juanita Eastham Fugate and Son-in-law Thomas Wolford. She left behind her husband James E Higgins and children Kimberly Wolford and James (Judy) Higgins. She also left behind a brother Prentiss (Joan) Eastham, sisters Marcella (Herbert) Howard, Annamae Nutty and brother David (Jeanne) Eastham. She also left behind grandson Andrew (Savannah) Wolford and granddaughters Kristy Cooper and Mari Anne (David) Wilhite, and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to all the special caregivers at Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Flanner and Buchanan, 2950 North High School Road, Indianapolis, IN 46224 on November 25, 2020 at 12 noon. A time for family and friends to gather will be held before the service from 10am-12noon.
