Evelyn Ann Metallic

Indianapolis

Evelyn “Evie” Ann Metallic May 7, 1925- February 18, 2019 Indianapolis Evelyn “Evie” Metallic passed away on February 17, 2019, leaving behind a legacy of  a life filled with family, friends and faith. Her steadfast sense of responsibility, resolute values, lively sense of humor, and fundamental love for life will be remembered by all who knew and loved her, namely her children, dozens of grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, siblings, friends, and fellow community members. Although Evie spent her adult life in Indianapolis, she was born in the northeastern city of Hartford City, IN to Matthias and Kathleen Scheidler. Her father was a businessman who owned the local movie theatre, which later would become a central fixture in many of her nine children’s fond memories. Evie was the second of six children, and excelled in school. She attended Holy Family School and later Hartford City High School, where she played the clarinet in the high school band. Her characteristic work ethic and quick wit blossomed at a young age; she received straight A’s and earned a scholarship to Purdue University where she graduated with a degree in Home Economics. Evie was an engaging, outgoing presence and she enjoyed a vibrant social life. In Hartford City, she often had three social engagements in a day, and was an active member of the Chi Omega sorority while at Purdue. Following graduation from Purdue, she worked in Indianapolis as a purchaser for RCA. It was there that a sartorial choice changed her life’s course. She wore a Notre Dame pin given to her by her brother, Joe, that caught the attention of a fellow co-worker; he told her about his love for Notre Dame, as well as his son Buzz, a Marine veteran who was attending the university  to study electrical engineering. This coworker served as matchmaker and eventually became her father-in-law. Evie and Buzz married in Evie’s hometown on February 11, 1950 on an unseasonably balmy 70 degree day. The pair went on to bring nine children into the world and enjoyed the journey of raising their family alongside each other. Raising her family and caring for their home kept Evie very occupied, but she still managed to find time to enjoy hobbies. She often played the piano and demonstrated great focus through her knitting, sewing and crochet work; later in life, she created many beautiful sweaters for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Generally very health conscious, she made a tradition of indulging at Christmastime by baking and gifting breakfast cinnamon rolls. She was athletic and enjoyed biking, walking, and playing tennis, as well as swimming and canoeing on Lake Lemon in southern Indiana, where the pair owned a lake cottage that continues to be a gathering place for her family on summer weekends. She vacationed in Florida with Buzz during his retirement, and the two were part of a bridge club with several other couples. Evie was heavily guided by her Catholic faith and attended daily Mass when she was in good health. She prepared meals for St. Michael’s priests, volunteered for the church and prayed outside of abortion clinics. She also donated her time and efforts to Mercy Meals, the Altar Society, and the Women’s Club. She worked Bingo events at Cardinal Ritter High School, where all of her children and several grandchildren studied, and served as a Girl Scout leader and grade school chaperone. Evelyn is survived by her children:  Greg (and Gerri) Metallic, Ann (and Mark) DiSalvo, Joe (and Donna) Metallic, Joan (and Mike) Cahill, Brian (and Julie) Metallic, John Metallic, Pat (and Melissa) Metallic, and Maria (and Tim) Beach, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and siblings: Joseph (Ann) Scheidler, Eleanor (Robert) McNamara, James (Quiquis) Scheidler. Preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, John (Buzz); Matthias and Kathleen Scheidler (parents), Mary Louise Scheidler (sister), Robert Scheidler (brother), JoAnn Scheidler (sister-in-law), Christine Kasle Zigler (daughter), Michael Kasle (son-in-law), and Alexander Beach (grandson). The family would like to thank Buzz and Evie’s caregivers Adriana, Anna, Diana, Gavis, Luanna and Maria for providing them with compassionate care in the last years of their lives. In the process, they became extended family. The visitation will be on Friday, February 22nd from 4-7 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m.  at Flanner Buchanan, 2706 Kessler Blvd. West Dr., Indianapolis.  A funeral Mass will be on Saturday, February 23rd at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 3354 West 30th Street Indianapolis.
