Esther B. Marshall

May 15, 1921 — December 11, 2017

Carmel, Indiana

Esther Lois Becker Battenberg Marshall

96, Carmel, IN passed away on December 11, 2017 at her home. Esther was born in Indianapolis to the late Elmer and Ruby Becker on May 15, 1921. A brother, Robert Becker, preceded her in death leaving his wife Norma Becker who referred to her sister-in-law as her “best buddy.”

After graduating from Arsenal Technical High School, Esther was employed by Richardsons Rubber Company and Real Silk Hosiery Mills and later for 38 years with Stone, Stafford & Stone/Commercial Union’s accounting department. After retiring in 1984, her passion was volunteering her bookkeeping and accounting skills along with providing financial contributions and loans to a private school started by her daughter, Dr. Janice Battenberg, in 1987. Esther continued her donations to the school for 20 years and eventually became a part-time employee. She was an essential team member during the school’s conversion from Battenberg & Associates, Inc. to a nonprofit organization: Midwest Academy dba Academy Plus.

In May 2011, Esther lost the love of her life, Allen Marshall. When Esther and Allen married on October 30, 1965, Allen’s three children joined them and her daughter from a previous marriage to Robert Battenberg, Dr. Janice Battenberg: Rebecca Denaway, Rex Marshall (Eva) and Alicia Lewis (Todd).

Esther loved talking about her grandchildren and enjoyed the arrival of each new great grandchild. She always looked forward to receiving updated pictures for the bookshelf gallery.

Past family gatherings and especially the celebration of birthdays and holidays meant so much to her. She will be remembered for her giving manner for those in need, and her contributions to help others.

Due to rehab complications from a fall, Esther was unable to walk for 10 ½ years, but she remained very mentally alert. She enjoyed reading and watching television until her eyesight failed. Listening to the old familiar hymns were comforting and special tunes brought her closer to her memories with Allen. They loved sing alongs, dancing, traveling and in days past sharing holidays and birthdays with family.

Esther will be greatly missed by two canine companions – Cody and Lacey. Since she was home-bound, their presence and interactions brought comfort. In lieu of flowers, contributions could be made to the Hamilton County Humane Society or to Primelife Enrichment in Carmel in honor of Rev. George Billeisen.

Visitation is at 12:00 prior to the 1:00 p.m. memorial service on Friday, December 15, at Flanner Buchanan – Carmel. Burial will be at Washington Park North Cemetery.
