Ernest John Witten, 89, of Beech Grove, Indiana, peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on August 6, 2023. He was born on June 3, 1934, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to parents, Edgar Witten and Helen (Bird) Witten.
On August 8, 1955, in Indianapolis, Indiana, he married the love of his life, June Arnold Witten, and they had two children together, Ernest R. and Jackie.
He graduated from high school in 1953. He played football for Tech and kicked the extra point to win the city championship for them. His name was in headlines as the “Hero of the Hour”. He joined the US Marine Corp during the Korean War and went to Korea at the end to participate in the final stages. He was a well-respected Conductor for the Con Rail Railroads for years.
Ernest is survived by his loving wife, June Witten; children, Ernest R. Witten and Jackie Quillen; 6 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and sister, Mary.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Don and Raymond Witten.
Visitation for Ernest will be from 2-3pm on Monday, August 14, 2023, at Flanner Buchanan – Memorial Park – 9350 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46229, with a funeral service immediately following at 3pm. Burial will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery.
