Emma Bernice Mosby, known to all as either, Mama, Granny, Aunt Bernice, or Bernice, was born June 25, 1920, in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late William and Hazel (Doyle) Farmer. She had a sister four years older named Alyce Farmer-Wright who preceded her in death.
Bernice received her education from the Indianapolis Public School System, attending elementary School #40, Booker T. Washington School #17, and graduating from Crispus Attucks High School at 16 years of age. She then matriculated one year at Indiana University.
She was a devout Christian and began going to Second Christian Church with her parents at 6 months of age. Bernice gave her life to Christ at 11 years of age and was baptized. The name of the church changed to Light of the World Christian Church where she, at the ripe age of 101, was the oldest member of the congregation at the time of her passing. She was a member of The Christian Women’s Fellowship and the Sage’s Ministry.
Bernice married at an early age and was blessed with 6 children, William, Hazel, Winston, Lelanetta, Vernon, and Alyce. She was a nurturing and devoted mother who loved all of her children dearly.
She was a Postal Clerk for the United States Postal Service for 18 years, retiring in 1982.
Bernice departed this life and went to be with Jesus on January 16, 2022. She was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her loving children, Winston Ward, Vernon (Sharon) Ward, Alyce Ward, 15 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. When I Leave
When I leave this house for my heavenly home
Don’t sit and moan and cry
Just try to live so we’ll meet again in
the sweet by and by
Be happy, I’m out of pain and stress
and I’m gone to get my eternal rest
Don’t think of my leaving you,
cause I’ve lived many years and I’ve paid my dues
Rejoice and say, at peace at last
You must live for the future, not the past
Remember the good things, even “Pepper Tea”
All of you are as wonderful as can be
I’ve taught all of you to stick together
Whether it’s sadness or whether it’s pleasure
Remember, always give God the glory
Had it not been for him, there would be no story
I have loved many, and helped a few
And there have been times I didn’t know what to do
But God always stepped in right on time
To give me directions and to keep us in line
I’ve been blessed to have the six of you
We’ve shared happiness and sadness too
Smile as I depart, this I must do
But even after death, I’ll still LOVE you.
God Bless You,
Mama
