Elsie Lucille Fleehearty

Lucille Fleehearty, born Elsie Lucille, to Arthur C and Elsie May (Leightner) Lyons on June 21, 1922, passed away on November 25, 2018. Lucille was an avid basketball watcher, rooted for anyone that played against IU in the Bobby Knight days, loved the Indiana Pacers and Purdue University, loved to sew and make handmade dried floral arrangements through her work with The Indianapolis Garden Club. She was very accomplished in all her pursuits, especially her home flower/rock garden, enjoyed having her granddaughters for sleepovers, and loved to cook for her loved ones. Lucille was known for her Coconut and Boston Cream Pies.

Lucille was a caregiver to several families throughout her life, enjoying caring for their children. She went on a grand summer vacation with her daughter and family in 1985, culminating in a stay at Myrtle Beach. While there, a category 1 hurricane hit, Bob, the only hurricane she ever experienced in her life. In the 1990’s, she went to Tulsa, OK, to visit family and friends with Megan, on a very long Greyhound bus trip (she did not like to fly). They had a wonderful time visiting the Lyons cousins and siblings, celebrating the Fourth of July holiday. Christmas was always a special holiday, she used a wood tree that she decorated beautifully, and the family always gathered for a delicious meal and opening presents to classical music. She and her brother lived together most of their lives, supporting each other. She hosted a 25th Anniversary party for her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Mike, in 1994. She went to dinner at MCL every Saturday with her brother, daughter and her family, always enjoying sitting behind her son-in-law, flicking the back of his head when he said something silly. That was quite often, Mike loved to tease her.

She was a good friend to those she knew, and a great sister to her three brothers and their wives. She loved her sisters-in-law as if they were blood. She and her brother Lewis had several beloved cats through the years (Suzy, Amy, and Missy) whom they doted on with affection. She was mom to Judith Ann (Michael P Canfield) Fleehearty, and grandmother to Carrie and Megan Canfield. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Paul, DeFord (Ford), and Lewis.
