Elmer George Glassing, age 97, of Avon, Indiana, passed away on April 5, 2020.
Elmer was born in Minnesota on February 8, 1923 to the Late Florence Sophie (Trost) Glassing. He was one of five children.
Elmer dutifully served in the US Army in WWII. His achievements are as follows: EAME Theater Ribbon with 6 bronze stars, Bronze Arrowhead Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, and a Good Conduct Ribbon. We are all grateful for his fearless call to arms. Elmer spent 42 years as a yardmaster conductor in the railroad industry, employed at both the Pennsylvania Railroad and Conrail. He spent many days boating with his family. Elmer was an avid water-skier and also enjoyed dancing, especially ballroom dancing. He loved to play euchre and poker in his spare time. But most of all, Elmer will be remembered for the everlasting love he had for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was the true embodiment of the “Glassing Family Stubbornness” with a heart of gold. The loss of Elmer leaves an empty space in the hearts of his family and friends.
Elmer was preceded in death by his loving mother, Florence Glassing (Little Grandma); his siblings, Marvin, Ruth, Babe, and Roy; as well as his grandchildren, Dawn and Ryan.
Remaining to cherish his memory are his children, Jerry Glassing (Sandy), Sue Nelson (the Late Paul Nelson); Sally Proctor (Dane); Kevin Glassing Sr. (Beth); his grandchildren, Robert, Kimberly, Matt, Chris, Jennifer, Ashley, and Kevin Jr.; his 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; his special fried Betty Leanohard; as well a host of extended family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution in Elmer’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project. Services are being held privately at this time.
