Ellen Irene Woolen was born in Indianapolis in 1933 and grew up on Tabor Street with seven siblings, who she loved fiercely. She was grounded in her Catholic faith and Irish heritage. She met Paul Woolen, her great love, and traveled the country with him while he was enlisted in the Marines. They had four children Michael, Gregory, Kelly, and Timothy, who filled their lives with joy and laughter.
Irene lived life to the fullest and always found a way to find humor in any situation. She was the Matriarch of the Gallagher family and enjoyed seeing all of her wonderful nieces and nephews at their annual family reunion.
Irene also cherished her time she spent as a volunteer at the Indiana Historical Museum. She was also a big part of the Christ the King Drama club as well as a big part of the church and community. Irene also loved playing cards with her dearest friends. Irene and her husband Paul also spent many years traveling the world; one of her favorites was getting to visit her native home of Ireland.
She is survived by her beloved brother Richard and her very supportive daughter Kelly (Steve), among many of her cousins, nieces, nephews and many grandchildren and great grandchildren, all who loved her very much and will miss her back scratches.
Irene’s Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5884 Crittenden Avenue, Indianapolis on Thursday, March 10, 2022 at 11:00am.
