Elise Sigg was born in Lorch, Germany on May 16, 1914 and was the youngest of eight children. Her Father became ill and passed away a few years later. At age 16 she had finished her schooling and moved to Stuttgart to live with her sister and find a job. There she joined the New Apostolic Church where she met Sebastian Sigg, her future husband. They were married on November 9, 1935. Their first son was born in 1943 during the Second World War. The family endured many hardships including the bombing of their apartment building. After the war, they applied to immigrate to the United States. Their second son was born in 1949 and their immigration application was finally approved in 1951.
Both were able to find jobs very soon after arriving in America. In 1957, Elise and Sebastian were granted their U.S. citizenship. Elise worked at Arsenal Technical High School for over 20 years before retiring. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. The family has remained active members of the local New Apostolic Church. Sebastian was a minister in the congregation. Elise always had their home open to the members and anyone in need. There was always a wonderful meal on the table for everyone to enjoy. She was a friend and mother to all she met.
Elise and Sebastian were married for 70 years when her husband passed away in 2005. She maintained her own senior’s apartment until the age of 100 and then moved to assisted living.
