Elijah Steven Lamont Munn entered the world surrounded by loved ones at Methodist Hospital on September 11, 2006. His parents, grandparents, and other family members eagerly awaited his arrival. Over his 17 years on earth, Elijah faced numerous challenges. As an infant he was diagnosed with Klinefelter syndrome, and during his toddler years, also received diagnoses of moderate intellectual disability, attention deficit disorder, and autism. Despite these challenges, Elijah demonstrated remarkable perseverance.
He found joy in riding bikes, listening to music, visiting local fire stations, spending time with family and fishing. Many of these activities served as coping strategies to help him navigate his difficulties. It was common to see Elijah walking down the street or enjoying his music. These coping techniques aided Elijah in navigating through the trauma he experienced as a child.
Elijah’s life is a testament to the challenges we all face, both seen and unseen. Nevertheless, it reminds us that God has a plan and purpose for each of our lives. Elijah taught us to be more patient with those who are different from us, encouraging empathy and reducing judgement. His deep love for his family showcased the importance of unconditional love. Elijah inspired us to express our individuality freely, often seen in his unique fashion choices, regardless of other’s opinion.
We learned that love is an action reflected in the quality time we spend with those we cherish. Elijah enjoyed spending time with those whom he loves. Jesus had 33 years on Earth, while Elijah had 17, but the impact of both lives will endure forever.
“There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven. A time to give birth and a time to die. A time to plant a time to uproot what is planted. A time to kill and a time to heal. A time to tear down and a time to build. A time to weep and a time to laugh. A time to mourn and a time to dance.”
