Elaine Otelia Forsyth

Elaine Otelia Forsyth, 90, of Indianapolis passed away at home January 22, 2018. She was born in Montgomery County, IA, March 4, 1927, to the late C. Albert and Ellen (Johnson) Swanson. Elaine grew up in rural Red Oak, IA, area, attended Coburg High School and graduated from Red Oak High School before attending Augustana College for a year in Rock Island, IL. She married the late Harold Allen Forsyth in 1946 and moved to Denver, CO, where they had three children, Steven E, James R and the late Yvonne Lynn “Bonnie” Moberly. Harold’s daughter, Michele Ann Forsyth, joined the family and they moved to Saginaw, MI, Indianapolis, IN, and Des Moines, IA before settling in Indianapolis for more than 60 years. Elaine started her business career in Indianapolis in the 1960s as a secretary with the Indiana Department of Education, later moving to the Burroughs Corporation (now Unisys). She was known for her loyalty, determination and thoughtfulness, and became a tremendous television sports enthusiast. She was a dedicated fan of Indiana University basketball and football. Children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life. She always had time for a competitive card game, especially bridge club. Elaine is survived by her sister, Carolyn Allen, her children, Steven E (Bridget), James R and Michele Ann; son-in-law Alan Moberly, grandchildren Courtney Corley (Matt), Whitney Geiger (Jason), Daniel (Molly), Michael and Brian Forsyth, Paige Rawlings, Regina Goodwin and 12 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Harold, her daughter, Bonnie Moberly (Alan), and three grandchildren, Scott Chilcote, James Forsyth and Robin Rawlings Wright (Cameron), preceded her in death. A private memorial service for family and friends will be conducted at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Scott Chilcote Fellowship, Indiana University Foundation, Attn. Depositor, P.O. Box 500, Bloomington, IN, 47402. Arrangements entrusted to Flanner Buchanan-Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
