Eileen “Loretta” Hupe

Indianapolis – 96, passed away May 16, 2020. She was born April 12, 1924 in Indianapolis to Arvil and Berl Ruggles. She attended Southport schools until her family moved to Oaklandon. She graduated in 1942 from Lawrence Central High School where she met her husband,Walt Hupe. She played really athletic and played basketball in high school. She loved her Indiana Pacers and knew stats of all the players. She loved gardening and was always sharing baby plants and trees with those who wanted them. She especially loved lavender bushes which were her favorite color, purple. She loved animals too, especially cats. She was a talented artist and worked in both oil and watercolor paints. Loretta was the love of Walt’s life. He even had her name tattooed on his arm while serving with the Iron Men of Metz in WWII. They traveled across the United States and Canada and attended the 95th Infantry reunions every year until Walt died. She would bring back surprises from her travels such as Native American jewelry and gifts for her grandchildren. She is survived by two sons, David Hupe (Jami) and Danny Hupe (Wink); grandchildren Kim Hupe Gray (Bryan), Chris Hupe (Karen), Ingrid Hupe, Megan Thixton and Emily Flynn. She has eight great grandchildren: Alex and Jack Hupe; Dylan and Kyle Gray; Raine Flynn and Zoe Glodowski; Alex and Ronan Thixton; nieces Sandra Edelson, Sally Ann Lotayef  and nephew Steve Vollmer; sister Rachel Pearlmutter. She was preceded in death by her husband Walt and her sister Charlotte Vollmer Reynolds. Funeral is Friday, May 22. Visitation 1 p.m., service 2 p.m. at the Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East Funeral home. Space is limited due to Covid-19 but online services may be viewed at: https://youtu.be/tBJtU5rtPm0
