Edward "Eddie" Medina of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, April 6, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on October 13, 1929, Edward was the son of Antonio Medina and Maria de Jesus Reyes, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded by his beloved sisters: Maria Engracia (Gracie) Olguin, Josefina (Josie) Espitia, and Maria Magdalena (Malena) Roman.
Edward is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 71 years, Aurora (Cavazos) Medina. They created a close-knit family that thrived under their love and care. Edward is survived by their six children: Monica Medina, Carlos (Nina) Medina, Veronica Medina, Marc (John Mapes) Medina, Richard Medina, and Leticia (Lino) Medina-Puente. Each carries forward his legacy of love, strength, and compassion.
He also leaves behind a brother-in-law, Miguel Olguin, and a growing family that includes 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. His strong family connections marked Edward's life, as did his dedication to his community and unwavering spirit, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Edward was born and raised in the "Block and Pennsy" neighborhood of East Chicago, Indiana, near Indiana Harbor. He graduated from Washington High School and was stationed in Berlin, Germany, during the Korean War. Edward retired from Inland Steel Company, working as a Safety Mill Foreman and as an Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent at the 76-inch and 44-inch hot strip mills and 100-plate mill. After retiring, Edward became a Driving Examiner for the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
In addition to his impressive professional accomplishments, Edward devoted much of his life to philanthropic and civic organizations, including the Knights of Columbus and the Lions Club, where he offered his time and expertise to enhance his community. As the former Chairperson of the Inland Employee Credit Union's board, Edward played a pivotal role in shaping the organization's strategic direction and enhancing its financial health. Under his leadership, he implemented innovative initiatives that improved member services and increased community engagement. Edward's commitment to professional development also led to the establishment of training programs for staff and board members, ensuring the credit union's ongoing growth and stability.
In addition, Edward held the esteemed position of Honorary Deputy Sheriff with the Marion County Sheriff's Department, where he played a vital role by offering bilingual support to the Public Safety Answering Point, also known as 911. His contributions were crucial in bridging language barriers and ensuring effective communication during emergencies, highlighting his dedication to public safety and community service.
Edward established a distinguished reputation for his exceptional proficiency in photography and an innovative creative vision that set him apart in the field. His photography prominently captures significant moments in the lives of families within Latino communities, highlighting their rich cultural heritage. This work can be viewed in The Latin Times newspaper, where he skillfully showcased his diverse talents as a photographer, writer, and political cartoonist. Through his lens, Edward documented life's milestones—from joyous celebrations to poignant family gatherings—ensuring that the stories of Latino families in Indiana were preserved and celebrated. His art has become integral to the historical tapestry of Latinos in Indiana, reflecting their experiences, challenges, and triumphs, and serving as a source of pride and inspiration for future generations.
Edward passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family's love. They express deep gratitude for the professional and compassionate care provided by the staff at Brighton Hospice during his final days. The unwavering dedication of the Brighton staff created an atmosphere that enabled his family to genuinely treasure the final moments they shared in a comforting environment. Brighton's compassion and professional expertise allowed us to foster a sense of peace and family belonging during his final hours.
