Earl R. Brown Jr.

Earl R. Brown Jr., age 94, passed away on June 22, 2019 in Indianapolis, IN. Earl was born August 13, 1924 in Kokomo, Indiana to Evelyn (Crosley) and Earl R. Brown, Sr. A native of Kokomo, Earl graduated from Kokomo High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy in WW2 in the Pacific on the USS Anne Arundel (AP-76), 1943-1946. He received his AB degree from DePauw University in 1950 and his MD degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1955. He took his residency in Radiology at the IU Medical Center in Indianapolis. Earl was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha and Phi Beta Pi medical fraternity.

He married Betty Lee Gunnell, daughter of Chester and Laverna (French) Gunnell of Kokomo on August 29, 1947. To this union five children were born. In 1959, Earl moved back to Kokomo working at St. Joseph Hospital until July of 1964, he then moved to Indianapolis and worked at Community East Hospital until his retirement in February 1, 1985.

Earl and Betty enjoyed traveling and playing golf. Earl was known for his photography and raising roses. When Betty became ill, he was her constant caregiver.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty (March 29, 1987), his two brothers: John Brown (2012), John’s wife, Elizabeth Brown (2009), and William Brown, DDS (2014) all from Kokomo, IN.

He is survived by his five children: Bob Brown (Barbara) of Grand Rapids, MI; Janis Johnston (Jerry) of Alton, KS; Jennifer Johnston of Cawker City, KS; Judy Rigsbee (Bruce) of New Palestine, IN; and Ross Brown of Indianapolis, IN; his sister, Corrine Pickering of Kokomo, IN; sister-in-law Sharon Brown of Heber, AR; 17 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; nieces; nephews; and many friends.

The family is having private graveside services.
