Earl Leon Sims

April 8, 1932 — March 29, 2020

Indianapolis, IN

Earl Leon Sims, 87, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away March 29, 2020. He was born on April 8, 1932 in Stanford, KY to the late Leon and Nellie (Carman) Sims.

As a young adult, Earl made his way to Indianapolis and began building a rich and fulfilling life. He met his lifelong partner Evelyn Faye (Edwards) Sims, and they were married in 1954. Together, Earl and Evelyn spent 65 years of their lives together. They raised four children on the south east side of Indianapolis.

Earl had a strong work ethic and had jobs at such Indianapolis institutions as Stokely VanCamp, Standard Changemaker, McBroom Electric, and Reid-Holcomb Industrial. This experience positioned him to own his own successful business in golf cart sales and service. He was a perfect example of “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.”

He was an avid race fan, and eventually owned his own late model stock car, #55, for many years. Brownstown Motor Speedway was his racing home, though he occasionally raced at other tracks. He was inducted into the Brownstown Speedway Hall of Fame in 2017.

He is survived by three of his children, Regina Walters, Mike (Glenda) Sims, Jonathan (Prudence) Sims; grandchildren, Melissa, Paul, Shelby, Landon, Piper; and great-grandchild, Paisley Faye.

He is preceded in death by his wife Evelyn Faye (Edwards) Sims and his son, Earl Lesle Sims.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Earl’s name directly to the family to assist with funeral expenses.
